Superfoods, by Jen Broyles

Superfoods are all the rage these days and there’s good reason for it. They are more than all-natural, whole foods; they are in fact both a food and a medicine. Superfoods are the most nutrient-rich, potent, concentrated foods on the plant. They are the ideal choice for improving one’s health, boosting the immune system, cleansing, reducing inflammation, alkalizing the body, boosting serotonin production, and enhancing sexuality. Below are a few of my favorite superfoods. They’re delicious and are great in combination with each other. They taste great and make you feel great!
1. Goji Berries
Goji berries are delicious, little, nutrient-packed red berries that look similar to raisins. They are a complete protein source containing 18 different amino acids and all eight essential amino acids. They contain many trace minerals such as zinc, iron, copper, selenium, phosphorous and calcium. Goji berries also contain some of the highest levels of antioxidants of any food in the world (2 to 4 times the amount found in blueberries). Also, they boost immune function, increasealkalinity, protect the liver, improve eyesight and blood quality, and provide anti-aging benefits.
Best ways to use:
Goji berries are great on salads, in smoothies, added to trail mix, or eaten alone.
2. Cacao
Cacao, or raw chocolate, is the highest antioxidant food on the planet. This is fantastic news for all you chocolate lovers out there!  Of course the raw form of chocolate is the healthiest because it has not been processed and no sugar has been added. Cacao is a great source of antioxidants, magnesium, iron, manganese and chromium. It elevates your mood and energy, builds strong bones, improves cardiovascular health, and is a natural aphrodisiac.
Best ways to use:
You can purchase cacao in powdered form or nibs. I love the powdered cacao to add to smoothies, and use in desserts. I put cacao in my morning smoothie everyday!!!
3. Raw Honey
Bee products, such as bee pollen and propolis, are packed with vitamins and minerals. Raw honey is not only amazingly delicious, but is rich in minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, and probiotics. Honey can also be used topically to heal wounds. Although raw honey has many nutritional properties, it is still a form of sugar, so consume in moderation.
Best ways to use:
Raw honey is a great natural sweetener to use in herbal teas, smoothies, and desserts
4. Coconut Oil
Coconut products (coconut oil, flesh, cream, water) are packed with fabulous nutrients.  Coconut oil is very valuable to the immune system as it contains antiviral, antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It also improves digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and amino acids. Coconut oil improves the utilization of blood sugar and improves the absorption of calcium and magnesium. Coconut oil consists of over 90% raw saturated fats in the form of medium chain fatty acids, which support the immune system, thyroid gland, nervous system, skin, and provide fast energy. It can also be used topically as a soothing moisturizer.
Best ways to use:
Add a tablespoon of coconut oil to smoothies, or use it in place of olive oil for cooking. Coconut oil is the most stable oil at high temperatures, so it does not turn rancid. Therefore, it is ideal for cooking.
5. Spirulina
Spirulina is a type of algae that provides a wide array of minerals, phytonutrients and enzymes. Additionally, spirulina is the world’s highest source of complete protein (65%). It is packed with iron, chlorophyll, and antioxidants. Spirulina also contains sulfur, which improves the immune system, physical strength, flexibility, complexion, healing speed, and liver and pancreas functionality.
Best ways to use:
Spirulina can be purchased in powdered form and added to smoothies or sprinkled on salads.  If you’re new to spirulina, I recommend starting with a small amount and gradually increasing, so you can grow accustomed to the taste.  Plus, be aware that it will turn your smoothies green!

  1. Adding another number to their age each year is something that people already expect. But if there is a change that not so many can readily accept, it is waking up one morning realizing that fine lines and wrinkles have already invaded what used to be young and vibrant faces.

So the concept of an anti-aging skin care was born.

While a lot may immediately think about the modern solutions to delay the physical manifestations of age, less is known about certain foods that can help achieve the same result. Here are some of them:

Pomegranate Juice – New studies reveal that a glass of this nutritious drink can help slow down the process of aging. In fact, pomegranate has been previously identified to also aid in relieving stress and in preventing heart diseases. Researchers have also recently found out that this juice can also significantly put the natural wear and tear of DNA at bay.

Green Tea – This healthy beverage contains strong antioxidants that have the capability to efficiently quell inflammation that is often associated with diabetes and relative conditions. Moreover, medical authorities have also proven that green tea can effectively prevent oxidative stress.

Olive Oil – The powerful antioxidants called Polyphenols found in olive oil have been recognized to help in inhibiting age-related ailments. In addition, the olive oil’s mono-unsaturated fats were also given credit four decades ago for the low rates of cancer and heart disease in the Greek island of Crete.

Fish – A study aimed at finding out why Alaska’s native Inuits were admirably free of heart diseases was conducted about thirty years ago. Today, scientists realize that the reason for such is the Inuits’ consumption of an extraordinary amount of fish. Fishes actually abound with omega-3 fats that help in preventing cholesterol build up in the arteries.

Chocolate – Researches identified the Kuna people in the San Blas islands off the Panama coast to have nine times lesser heart disease rate compared to mainland Panamanians. Such remarkable health record was attributed to their regular intake of a cocoa-rich beverage. Cocoa contains flavanols that aid in preserving healthy blood vessels.

Wine – When taken in controlled amount and in moderation, alcohol can protect a person from age-related memory loss, heart disease, and diabetes. Red wine in particular, contains a compound called resveratrol which can help activate genes that have the capacity to slow down cellular aging.

Yogurt – While its age-defying capability has not been directly proven, this healthy food is recognized to be rich in calcium which efficiently prevents osteoporosis. It also contains ‘good bacteria’ that aid in reducing age-related intestinal illnesses and in maintaining gut health.

Nuts – Relevant researches conducted recently revealed that people who regularly eat nuts gain an extra two and a half years. Experts say these comfort foods can supply the body with abundant unsaturated fats. The health benefits of such fats are closely associated to those of the olive oil. Nuts also contain high concentration of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Of course, aside from keeping your food choices smart and healthy, you can also take advantage of modern anti-wrinkle formula to achieve more satisfying results. And, among the products dedicated to helping preserve a youthful skin are serums.

The use of serums is an excellent way to achieve the healthy natural outer layer that you want without the need to go through an invasive procedure. Thus, you can readily make your dream skin a reality using a completely safe and budget-wise means that offer an equally stunning output.

Ultimately, an effective anti-aging serum paired with a healthy lifestyle can certainly help preserve the youth in you.

  2. Thanks, for this fabulous comment! I am happy because my daily diet includes most of the superfoods. Moreover, I agree it is very convenient to complement a healthy diet with physical exercise, meditation and, as you point out, with serums, moisturizers. I use and adore natural beauty products!

    • It is entirely true that real beauty shines from the inside out; which means that how you feel about yourself inside, truly reflects on your appearance. If you have low self-esteem and generally don’t feel good about yourself, eventually that’s how you will appear to the outside world. Don’t let people take advantage of your insecurities. Here are a few ways to boost your self-esteem that will make all the difference in your overall presence.

Getting enough sleep is imperative to your beauty regimen. Sleep is when your body regenerates itself during different times of the night. Interrupting this process will not only decrease your overall health, but can take a negative toll on your physical appearance. You may notice that when you get less sleep, you are starting to see bags under your eyes or circles as well as a less youthful glow. Aim to get about 8 to 10 hours of continuous sleep each night and you can see your body regenerate and look beautiful before your eyes.

Drinking plenty of water is essential to your body’s health. Soda, coffee and alcoholic beverages don’t count; they only add more toxins to your overwhelmed body. Water is what helps keep your optimal health as it cleanses the toxins out of your body and fills your cells. It has been recommended that everyone should drink about 8 glasses of water each day, but if your work doesn’t allow you to leave for constant bathroom breaks, drink as much water as you possibly can. Switch your unhealthy drinks and swap them for a glass of pure water.

You may have a gorgeous and curvy body, but if you don’t wear clothes that accent your curves in a positive way, no one will ever be able to tell. Most women feel self-conscious about their bodies because they may have a little extra on the hips, stomach or the back, but remember, everything can be hidden with just the right clothes. Consider your current body and think of outfits that can work appropriately for your figure. Just because a celebrity or a mannequin is wearing something at the mall, it doesn’t mean it’s the right outfit for you.

Hairstyle has a lot to do with how people will perceive you. A lot of people have outdated hairstyles or a style that doesn’t complement their facial features. Arranging your hair in an unflattering way or having a bad haircut can age you years! Go out to your favorite salon and get a new haircut. You will automatically notice how different you may look, but in a positive way.

Department stores sometimes offer free makeovers at the makeup counters. This is mostly a great way for them to advertise their products, but it also works for you because you get a free lesson in makeup. Most people have a makeup routine that they stick to everyday, but letting someone else have a go can enhance your beauty in a way you never saw it before. Always remember, less is more!

Your beauty really shines on a higher level when you are comfortable and happy being you. I sincerely hope the tips in this article have highlighted some great ways you can start feeling happy about a new you.

      welcome in my bloge 🙂
